In Fred Zinnemann’s first film in seven years, the Anglo-French thriller Day of The Jackal (Universal Pictures, 1973), our protaganist Edward Fox drives along the Promenade des Anglais. He treats viewers to a lingering shot of the prominent dome of the iconic Le Negresco hotel in the background. Constructed in 1912 on classified as a historic monument by the French state, we are treated to a rare interior view of the palatial hotel as he walks into reception and uses the telephone, where he discovers his cover has been blown.

• Director : Fred Zinemann • Cast : Edward Fox, Michael Lonsdale • Genre : Action thriller • Runtime : 145 min • Production year : 1973 • Rating : 15 • Distributed by Universal

Once the Jackal, Edward Fox realises his cover has been blown, he leaves the Negresco Hotel in Nice, and drives his Alfa Romeo Spider along the D51 Avenue Agerbol in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. We see him passing the Vista Palace Hotel, before coming to a halt at junction signposted Italie or Paris. Our protagnist briefly ponders whether to continue with the assasination of President Charles de Gaulle in Paris. He does, and turns onto the D2564 Route de le Turbie towards the now defunct Route Nationale 7. Today, although predictably busier, the location is little changed. The aforementioned signpost now points towards the A8 motorway which was still being constructed while the film was being shot.
