Nickie Ferrante (Cary Grant), a well-known playboy and dilettante in the arts, meets Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) aboard the transatlantic ocean liner SS Constitution en route from Europe to New York. Each is involved with someone else. After a series of chance meetings aboard the ship, they establish a friendship. When Terry joins Nickie on a brief visit to his grandmother Janou when the ship anchors near her home at Villefranche-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean coast, she sees Nickie with new eyes and their feelings blossom into love.  Whether or not the actors were actually present in Villefranche-Sur-Mer, and the house does actually exist, has been a source of contention among film fans for years. Most of the movie was shot on a sound stage with second-unit photography taking place afterwards. A search for the actual house in 2014 proved fruitless. Many public pathways and viewing points were present in the area where it seemed likely the scene was shot from. However, one thing that points to actual on-location filming was found in the Welcome Hotel in the centre-ville, where they have a signed photo of Grant and Kerr, ostensibly made while filming was taking place (See left). Within that frame is a small photo of the scene in which they are standing, overlooking the Bay of Villefranche. If anyone has any details on the supposed house location, please do contact Riviera On Film.
