Founded in 1295 by Charles II of Anjou, Villefranche-sur-Mer has conserved its picturesque charm over the centuries. US comedy and an adaptation of the 1964 movie, Bedtime Story, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was filmed entirely on location in the French Rivera, making use of Villefranche as its primary base. The opening titles, featuring Michael Caine in the role of gigalo extrordanaire, provide a wide-angled panormic shot of Villefranche at night, taken from the opposite shore, at the Villa Rothschild on Cap Ferat (see photo below).

As the characters discuss the Jackal, Freddy (Steve Martin) pulls up outside the Welcome Hotel in a white Ferrari. Coincidentally, Anton Rogers starred in another film, set on the Riviera, 17 years earlier and also featuring a "Jackal" – Day Of The Jackal. Later on in the film, Steve Martin harrasses a young lady for a copy of the Wall Street Journal, on Place Amélie Pollonais, Villefranche’s largest open piazza - an area often used for antiques and fish markets and reguarly hosting live music. Steve and Michael disappear up a staircase on Boulevard de L’Impératrice Alexandra Féodorovna. An entire day was spent shooting the teaser trailer, featuring a sequence on the Quai de l’Amiral Courbet in Villefranche, which does not appear in the released film. The scene shows Freddy Benson (Steve Martin) and Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine) walking along a boardwalk, politely moving out of the way of other people. Freddy pushes an old lady into the water, and Lawrence shoves a kid's face into his cotton candy. Director Frank Oz has said that audiences were very surprised to learn that the scene was not part of the finished film.

Then and Now

Michael Caine arrives in the Riviera early on in the film, alighting at Villefranche railway station which is little changed today. Regional trains reguarly leave Villefranche for Nice and Monaco, a short hop along the Cote d’Azur. A pan of the fishing harbour of Villefranche and we are treated to a shot of Michael Caine and Anton Rogers sitting on Quai de l’Amiral Courbet with the La Chapelle Saint-Pierre behind them. This is precisely the same location that Michael Douglas appeared three years earlier in Jewel of the Nile, when he jumped on a motorbike with Kathleen Turner.

The first time we see Michael Caine’s pad in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, we are left with no doubt as to his wealth and influence. Caine is sat at the end of his manicured garden, eating breakfast, waited on by his butler. And if this wasn’t enough, his view is that of the legendary Bay of Millionaires. In reality, Caine’s abode is actually the sumptious, but very private, Villa Hier,  situated at the end of Cap d’Antibes. The villa is adorned with stunning neo-gothic elements of design, a large pool,  a banana tree grove, and sclupted dolphins. Many of these features can be seen in the famous “Walking On The Ritz” sequence where Steve Martin learns the art of being a conman.   It is believed that currently in residence there is an Italian business mogul.

Alexandra Lloyd Properites of Nice, who currently have Villa Hier on their books to rent, state the following: Maximum advantage has been taken here of the sublime location with several seaside terraces providing breathtaking views. The large curved Swimming Pool features an unusual waterfall effect and is surrounded by a large terrace, lawns and palm trees. There is also a floodlit tennis court. From the elegant Art Deco style entrance to the Villa, the feeling of space is evident, as is the use of classic materials. The extensive use of contemporary art complements the timeless architecture of the property.guardian.

The Sitting Room, spanning the width of the property, a splendid fireplace, and several full height French doors. The adjoining terrace with its stone balustrades then leads onto the magnificent sweeping double staircase. The Dining Room seats eight with ease and enjoys natural light through the ingenious use of an atrium-style skylight. A spacious Library and two guest bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. A Master Suite consisting of a spacious main bedroom with two adjacent offices, two luxuriously-appointed marble bathrooms and a terrace overlooking the gardens. The lower level of the Villa also houses a gym. Beyond the Villa is a separate cottage suitable for staff, a further separate staff apartment and on-site live-in
